Nursing Teaching on Therapeutic Uses of Vilazodone

Nurse educated the patient and caregiver on the therapeutic use of vilazodone as follows:

1. Major depression: Vilazodone increases the serotonin concentration and enhancing the actions of serotonin at the junction between nerve cells. This helps with contributing to relief of anxiety, control symptoms of depression, and promote feelings of well-being, contentment, and happiness.
2. Anxiety: Promotion of serotonin actions in nervous system with vilazodone contributes to improved relaxation, relief of anxiety, and promotion of feelings of contentment and happiness. So, vilazodone can be used for mood enhancement and management of mild agitation and anxiety.
3. Bipolar disorder: Vilazodone can be used along with antipsychotics, such as, olanzapine, for management of depressive symptoms in individuals with history of bipolar disorder.
4. Panic disorders and dysphoria: By allaying the fears and calming down anxiety, vilazodone can help with providing relief from premenstrual syndrome, panic disorders, and dysphoric states.
5. Obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCDs): Anxiety is one major component reinforcing obsessive compulsive behaviors. Vilazodone, by reducing the anxiety, help to control the obsessive compulsive behaviors and thus can be used to manage the OCDs.
