Nurse Teaching Topic: Contraindications for Using Abelcet

Patient was educated on contraindications for using Abelcet as follows:

1. Patients with history of antibiotic associated diarrhea must be cautious about using Abelcet. Discuss with your doctor regarding your history of the same.
2. Abelcet is metabolized and excreted by the kidneys. Individuals with history of compromised renal function cannot metabolize and excrete Abelcet and this can lead to increased blood levels of Abelcet for longer duration, leading to toxicity. Abelcet should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals.
3. Abelcet intake can increase the risk for skin rash, ranging from mild to severe exfoliating rash and blisters. Individuals with history of extreme skin rashes should be aware of this response and observe a close watch on the same, while taking Abelcet.
4. Abelcet should be avoided in individuals with history of cardiac arrhythmias, as it has the potential to exacerbate any underlying arrhythmias. Such individuals upon taking Abelcet could present with irregular heartbeats and life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. Individuals with history of chronic disturbance in serum magnesium and potassium ions are at increased risk for arrhythmias. Also, individuals taking Lasix are at increased risk for losing potassium, thus setting the ground for life-threatening arrhythmias, upon taking Abelcet.
5. Observe compliance with any regular lab work ordered. As Abelcet carries the risk for damage to the liver and kidneys, hepatic and renal function could be periodically monitored. Watch closely to report any symptoms of itching, jaundice with yellowing of skin and sclera, dark urine, altered metabolism with nausea and vomiting, pain in the right upper abdominal quadrant, and fatigue suggesting damage to the liver. Any symptoms of renal injury and altered kidney function, such as, altered levels of consciousness and reduced urine formation, should be closely watched for and reported to the physician.
