Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Donepezil as follows:

  1. Potentiation of acetylcholine action in the body, secondary to donepezil use, can result in reduced heart rate and low blood pressure. This side-effect of donepezil intake can lead to complications, especially in individuals with history of hypotension or bradycardia. This side-effect of donepezil can also pose an issue in individuals with history of hypertension or tachycardia and taking medications for the same. Donepezil use can significantly lower the heart rate and BP in these individuals and increase the risk for dizziness, accidents, and bradyarrhythmias. Discuss with your physician regarding your history of hypotension and dizziness, if any, and your safety with donepezil. Maintain a log of every day blood pressure and heart rate readings. Promptly report to your physician regarding any consistent episodes of dizziness, hypotension, and bradycardia, for a change in dose of donepezil or plan of care to be considered. Observe compliance with daily recommended fluid intake, to offset symptoms of hypotension and avoid any falls or accidents. Report to your physician regarding any worsening signs and symptoms of arrhythmias, such as, frequent episodes of fatigue, lightheadedness, near fainting, shortness of breath, chest pain or discomfort, and/or pounding heartbeat, so that, your dosage on donepezil could be revised or alternative plan considered.
  2. Maintain strict compliance with intake of the medication as ordered, with regards to dosage and frequency, to derive the benefit of the medication.
  3. Do not change the dose on this medication without consulting your doctor.
