Patient/caregiver was educated on how to take Keppra as follows:

  1. Take this medication as ordered by your physician. Take the medication dose for the duration prescribed without fail.
  2. Take the medication dose at the same time, every day, to avoid forgetting the intake of medication. Taking the medication at regularly spaced intervals help maintain appropriate blood levels of keppra needed for control of seizures and neuropathic pain symptoms and prevents toxicity with the medication.
  3. Do not change the dose and frequency on this medication without consulting your doctor.
  4. Keppra can induce some nausea and vomiting, when taken on empty stomach. Taking the medication with a glass of water and some food or snack can help avoid these unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms.
  5. Keppra intake can induce some dizziness and results in sleep. Do not take keppra with alcohol or opioid pain medications, such as, hydrocodone and codeine, as these products can add to the dizziness and confusion caused by keppra. A number of OTC cough medications, antihistamines, antiseizure medications, muscle relaxants, antidepressant and antianxiety medications, can potentiate the confusion caused by keppra, thus resulting in many cross reactions and side-effects and so, must be avoided taking along with keppra. Starting the medication at a low dose and gradually increasing the dose, to help optimum control of your symptoms, can contribute to reducing the drowsiness and dizziness due to the medication.
  6. Take the keppra immediate-release tablet as a whole, using a glass of water and do not cut or crush the tablet. If you are prescribed keppra as an extended-release tablet, do not cut or crush the tablet. Cutting or crushing the extended-release tablet can result in rapid absorption of the drug into the blood stream, thus resulting in toxicity. Swallow the extended-release tablet as a whole, using a glass of water.
  7. Keppra is also available as an orally disintegrating tablet in suspension. Do not cut, crush, or chew on this tablet and do not swallow this tablet as a whole, which can compromise the therapeutic benefit of the medication. Remove only one dose from the blister package at a time, just when it is time for intake of the dose.  Make sure the hands are dry before getting the tablet out of the package. This orally disintegrating tablet in suspension must be placed on the tongue and sip a small amount of water. Hold the water in the mouth, with the tablet suspended in the water for 10 seconds, to allow the tablet dissolve in the water completely, and then, swallow the mixture. You can also place this tablet in a cup with about 10 ml of water. Allow the tablet to dissolve in this water, by gently swirling the cup. Drink the mixture, once the tablet is completely dissolved.
  8. Keppra could also be prescribed as an oral liquid/suspension. Do not forgot to shake the suspension bottle well, before you measure and draw the recommended dose of medication, for administration through the mouth. Exercise caution while measuring the dose, by using the prescribed dose measuring device. Do not use the regular kitchen spoons for dose measurement, to prevent the risk for over/under dosing.
  9. Keppra can take some time to fairly adjust to your body, before any relief with nerve pain and control of seizure activity is experienced. So, do not discontinue taking the medication without your physician’s consult, as you failed to see the desired result immediately after taking the medication.
  10. Keppra only prevents the seizures from happening and controls the neuropathy, by reducing the rapid firing of the nerves. But, keppra does not fix the actual condition causing the seizures or the neuropathy. Continue taking keppra as ordered, even if you experience relief from the symptoms. Abrupt discontinuation on keppra intake can result in relapse of seizure activity and worsening of nerve pain. Discontinuing the medication should only be on your physician’s recommendation and must be done slow and gradual, using tapering doses.
  11. Notify your doctor of any continuing episodes of seizures, worsening nerve pain and discomfort, or continuing unpleasant side-effects, so that, your dosage on the medication could be revised.
  12. Your physician could change the dose of keppra, based on the relief obtained, results of periodical labs drawn, or side-effects developed. So, maintain compliance with follow-up physician appointments, to update your physician on your status with keppra use. Be accommodative to the plan of frequent dose changes, until you show an optimum response.
  13. If you miss a dose, try taking it at the earliest notice of noncompliance. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the dose scheduled. Do not take an extra dose to try making up for the missed dose. Notify your doctor and other health care personnel regarding your dose noncompliance.
