Patient was educated on pulmonary embolism as follows:

  1. Pulmonary embolism is a condition that arises from sudden blockage of a blood vessel in the lung, secondary to a clot formation.
  2. The most common cause of blood clot formation in the body is a deep vein thrombosis, where clots form in the deep veins of the lower extremities.
  3. These blood clots can sometimes break loose in the veins of the legs and get carried by the blood stream along the venous circulation to the right heart.
  4. When blood is pumped by the right heart to the lung, via the pulmonary artery, the clot can enter the lung along with the blood and get deposited in the lung.
  5. The clot can be big at times and get occluded in the pulmonary artery, blocking it and resulting in reduced blood supply to the lungs.
