Patient was educated regarding thinning foods for difficulty with esophageal phase of swallowing as follows:

  1. Esophageal dysphagia usually presents as a difficulty swallowing solids than swallowing liquids.
  2. This condition presents with a sensation of something sticking in the back of throat, chest discomfort, difficulty breathing, exhaustion and pain during swallowing.
  3. Since these individuals have increased difficulty swallowing solids, foods that are too thick are contraindicated for them.
  4. So, foods can be thinned before serving them, by the addition of following thinners
  • Milk
  • Fruit juice
  • Broth
  • Gravy
  • Soup

  1. Foods that are thinned by addition of these thinners can make it easy on the individual to swallow and aspiration less likely.
  2. Consult your doctor and speech pathologist for any other recommendations towards a safe swallow.
