Patient was educated on signs and symptoms of uncomplicated gastroesophageal reflux disease as follows:

  1. In the initial stages, GERD can manifest with simple complaints. Unresolved GERD over time can become severe with frequent episodes and may present with complications.
  2. GERD is usually manifested as a heartburn, which is a burning and bitter sensation in the throat.
  3. Typically, individuals with GERD present with this finding, after having a heavy meal.
  4. Irritation of the esophagus due to the acid can result in dry cough.
  5. Individuals with GERD can also present with symptoms of indigestion, such as, abdominal fullness, bloating, and belching, secondary to the loss of acid from the stomach, traveling up into the esophagus.
  6. The symptoms typically worsen and can be severe with lying down flat or bending down. The symptoms tend to improve with the individual assuming an erect posture.
