Patient was educated regarding risk factors for gastroesophageal reflux disease as follows:

  1. Alcohol
  • Alcohol causes relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter, which allows the acid contents from stomach to move up into the esophagus.
  1. Fatty foods
  • High fatty foods also cause relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter, which allows the acid contents from stomach to move up into the esophagus.
  1. Tight clothing
  • Individuals wearing tight dresses and corsets are more prone for episodes of GERD, as the tight fittings can exert more pressure on the abdomen and help force the acid contents up into the esophagus, precipitating attacks of GERD.
