Patient was educated on reasons for elevated blood pressure as follows:

  1. Blood pressure is a direct product of the resistance offered by your blood vessels to the flow of blood and heart rate.
  2. So, any conditions that can alter these parameters will influence the blood pressure readings. Some examples are given below
  • Any conditions of stress, fear, or exercise that will increase the heart rate can increase the blood pressure.
  • Any conditions that will result in increase in the blood volume, such as fluid retention due to excessive salt, can result in elevated blood pressure.
  • Any conditions that can result in increase in the force of contraction of the heart, such as narrowing of blood vessels, can result in increased volume of blood pumped out of the heart and can lead to elevated blood pressure.
  • Any conditions that can result in narrowing of blood vessels, such as increased adrenaline and noradrenaline during stress or cholesterol deposition, will increase the resistance offered by blood vessels to the flow of blood and so, can lead to elevated blood pressure.
  • Any conditions that can compromise the renal function, can lead to retention of salt and water, which in turn can lead to elevated blood pressure.
  1. Knowing the reason for the hypertension can help manage the condition better.
