Patient was educated on the complications of Crohn’s disease as follows:

  1. Osteoporosis
  • Anti-inflammatory steroid medications prescribed for managing the symptoms of Crohn’s disease can result in weakening of bones and steroid induced osteoporosis in long run and can result in pathological fractures.
  1. Malnutrition
  • Chronic unresolved inflammatory bowel disease with ulceration of the intestinal wall can result in poor absorption of nutrients from the intestines and consequent malnutrition.
  • Prolonged malnutrition can contribute towards weight loss.
  • Malnutrition is more prominent in Crohn’s disease than ulcerative colitis.
  1. Colon cancer
  • Crohn’s disease involving the colon causing chronic inflammation of the colon can increase risk for malignancy and lead to developing colon cancer.
