Patient was educated on the complications of Crohn’s disease as follows:
- Osteoporosis
- Anti-inflammatory steroid medications prescribed for managing the symptoms of Crohn’s disease can result in weakening of bones and steroid induced osteoporosis in long run and can result in pathological fractures.
- Malnutrition
- Chronic unresolved inflammatory bowel disease with ulceration of the intestinal wall can result in poor absorption of nutrients from the intestines and consequent malnutrition.
- Prolonged malnutrition can contribute towards weight loss.
- Malnutrition is more prominent in Crohn’s disease than ulcerative colitis.
- Colon cancer
- Crohn’s disease involving the colon causing chronic inflammation of the colon can increase risk for malignancy and lead to developing colon cancer.
