Patient was educated on the complications of Crohn’s disease as follows:

  1. Perforation of intestine
  • Swollen and weakened wall of the intestine can result in perforation of the intestine, peritonitis, and shock.
  1. Severe dehydration
  • Crohn’s disease with chronic inflammation of the large intestinal wall with ulceration of the wall can result in reduced water reabsorption from the large intestine and can present with symptoms of dehydration, such as, dry skin and rapid heartbeat.
  1. Risk for clot formation
  • Reduced fluid absorption in the large intestines and dehydration can increase the risk for an individual to form blood clots.
  1. Anemia
  • If the blood loss is heavy, patients can present with symptoms of iron deficiency anemia, such as, extreme shortness of breath, pale skin and mucous membranes, dizziness, fatigue, and exhaustion.
