Patient/caregiver were instructed on measures to help prevent development of diabetic ketoacidosis as follows:

Diabetic patients must observe compliance with recommendations made for calorie intake limitation, ADA diet, and physical activity, which can help manage blood sugars in healthy target range.

Diabetic patients must observe compliance with recommendations made for oral anti-diabetic medications and insulin administration.

Diabetic patients must observe compliance with regular blood sugar checks, as ordered. Compliance with blood sugar checks must be absolute during stressful states, such as, illness and infections and for individuals on sliding scale insulin at every mealtime.

Observing compliance with these tasks can help prevent abrupt spikes in blood sugar levels and thereby prevent frequently changing insulin demands. This can contribute towards preventing development of insulin resistance and the associated risk for diabetic ketoacidosis.

Poorly managed diabetics with history of medication noncompliance, abrupt hyperglycemia, and incidents of ketoacidosis can keep urine ketones test kits handy. On presentation with signs and symptoms of ketoacidosis, individuals can test their urine for ketones and seek out medical assistance in the event of high urine ketone levels.
