Patient/caregiver were instructed on the management measures for diabetic ketoacidosis as follows:
Management of diabetic ketoacidosis requires close medical attention and supervision. Upon noting s/s of ketosis, individuals must notify the physician and seek medical attention.
Administering IV fluids and electrolytes, can help manage the dehydration and associated issues with reduced circulating blood volume.
Replacement of fluid and electrolytes can help reduce risk for cardiac arrhythmias, acute renal failure, and development of blood clots.
Administering insulin in appropriate doses under close medical supervision, during an acute incident of diabetic ketoacidosis, can help reduce the risk for dangerous dip in blood sugars and hypoglycemia presentation.
Compliance with dietary recommendations during an acute phase of diabetic ketoacidosis is of utmost importance. This can help with preventing abrupt spikes in blood glucose and optimal utilization of insulin.
Insulin administered in appropriate doses can help improve the ability of neural tissues to use the glucose available. This can help reduce the acute confusion and delirium experienced by patients in ketosis and reduce the risk for presentation with coma.
