Patient was educated on complications of gastroesophageal reflux disease as follows:
- Noncompliance with GERD relief measures suggested can result in unresolved episodes of GERD for prolonged periods of time, which can cause a lot of complications.
- Prolonged attacks of GERD with acid injury to the esophageal mucosa can lead to esophageal narrowing and development of stricture.
- Severe exacerbation of uncontrolled episodes of GERD can result in severe dry cough with choking and shortness of breath.
- Narrowing of esophagus can bring on dysphagia, which is difficulty swallowing.
- Prolonged acid injury to the esophageal mucosa can result in rupture of the mucosa and bleeding, which can present as blood in the vomit or stool.
- Long term indigestion secondary to the uncontrolled GERD can result in symptoms of malnutrition and weight loss.
- Poorly controlled acid reflux over a period can cause permanent changes in the mucosa of the esophagus that are carcinogenic.
