Patient/caregiver were instructed regarding sleep apnea as follows:
- Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder with abnormal breathing pattern during sleeping hours.
- Individuals with sleep apnea can present with brief respiratory pauses during sleeping hours.
- The causes and contributing factors for the respiratory pause can vary widely. Accordingly, management measures can also vary depending on the cause contributing.
- Complete cessation of an individual’s breathing pattern during the respiratory pause time can result in poor quality sleep pattern, interrupted sleep with multiple awakenings and difficulty falling back to sleep, and extreme tiredness and exhaustion due to inability to rest.
- Cessation of individual’s breathing pattern can also contribute to compromise in the much needed oxygen supply to the vital organs of the body, thus affecting their function.
