Patient was educated on effects of weight gain in dialysis patients as follows:

  1. In individuals on dialysis, the function of fluid regulation and elimination is totally limited to the time of dialysis appointment, as their kidneys are no more functional.
  2. All the fluid consumed between two dialysis appointments is retained by the body, increase the patient’s weight and can act as an overload on the heart.
  3. Individuals on dialysis are weighed regularly before and after each dialysis appointment.
  4. The weight recording taken before the procedure will determine how much of fluid can safely be removed during dialysis.
  5. The weight recording taken after the dialysis appointment is a benchmark for determining the allowance on fluid intake, until the next dialysis appointment.
  6. Any weight gain of 5 pounds or more between two dialysis appointments or any weight gain of 10 pounds or more in one week can be seriously detrimental to patient’s health and is an indicator of poor compliance with fluid intake recommendations.
