Patient/caregiver was educated on measures to prevent development of warts as follows:
- Individuals having warts on the trunk and genital areas must avoid sharing any clothing, towels, undergarments, and bedsheets with others.
- Individuals having warts on the hands, feet, fingers, and toes must avoid sharing any gloves, shoes, and socks with others.
- Individuals having warts must avoid sharing any equipment they use to remove the wart such as, pumice stone or nail clipper or emery board, with others. This helps reduce risk for viral transmission. Also, use separate equipment for wart removal and healthy skin sites, to reduce risk for viral spread to new skin sites. Dispose of the equipment used for wart removal appropriately.
- Biting on the fingernails and cuticles can leave areas of broken skin that can provide access to the wart virus. Avoid biting fingernails and individuals with compulsive behavior of biting nails must seek behavior therapist intervention to contain the habit and avoid biting fingernails.
- Vaccination is available for young children and adults against HPV virus. The vaccinations protect against certain strains of the virus, especially ones causing genital warts and cervical cancers in women. Check with your doctor regarding your eligibility for vaccines against the wart virus.
