Patient/caregiver was educated on management measures for vitiligo as follows:
- Prescription steroid ointment, such as, cortisone, could be topically applied to the affected spots on the skin. Application of steroid ointment can help with controlling the autoimmune activity and damage to melanocytes in the affected skin.
- A prescription medication, Monobenzone, could be used as a cream applied to the skin surrounding the area of vitiligo spots. This medication helps with depigmentation of skin at the site of application and will turn them light-colored, to match up with areas of vitiligo.
- As vitiligo is mainly an autoimmune in origin, there is no permanent cure to this condition. The major goal on management is either to restore the pigmentation in the skin involved or removing the pigment in the skin surrounding the area of involvement to make it uniform & evenly light-colored.
