Patient/caregiver was educated on management measures for vitiligo as follows:

  1. Light-colored vitiligo spots interspersed with normal dark colored skin can be a cosmetic issue. Cosmetic products & makeups can help camouflage light-colored spots on the skin. Hair dyes can help restoring the color in individuals with vitiligo affecting the hair.
  2. Exposure to ultraviolet rays in the sunlight result in tanning and pigmentation of skin. Sunscreen ointments contain sun protection factors that block the ultraviolet light and prevent tanning and darkening of skin. Use of sunscreens to the normal skin surrounding the area of vitiligo spots can help minimize tanning in the normal skin, thus making it appear in a lighter shade. This helps with limiting the contrast between normal skin and vitiligo spots, thus addressing the cosmetic concern. While choosing sunscreen ointments, pick the ointments with sun protection factor of 30 or more, which helps with protecting the skin blocking at least 97% of ultraviolet light.
  3. Narrow band ultraviolet light could also be used as a laser treatment on the vitiligo spots. Exposure to ultraviolet rays can result in tanning and increased pigmentation of skin in the vitiligo spots, thus limiting the contrast between normal skin and vitiligo affected portions of the skin.
