- Viruses constantly undergo mutations and give rise to new variants of the virus.
- Multiple variants of COVID have been identified so far around the world during this time of pandemic.
- Variant strains of the virus can be different in the mode & ease of transmission, degree of infectivity, and the extent of organ systems affected due to the infection.
- Monitoring these different variants is important to study the whole spectrum of disease caused by the virus.
- Vaccines authorized for COVID prevention are reportedly effective against most of the variants currently in circulation and these variants of COVID are being monitored carefully.
