Patient/caregiver was instructed on natural defenses against UTI in males as follows:

 Periodical bladder emptying:

  1. Periodical emptying of bladder can help avoid back-up of urine in the urinary system and frequently wash the bacteria out, thus preventing development of UTI.
  2. Urinary retention with backed-up urine can offer the bacteria more time to gain hold and thus, is a favorable medium for growth of microorganisms leading to UTI.

Length of the urethra:

  1. The length of urethra in males is longer than the length in females.
  2. This offers more protection to males, as bacteria now have to travel longer to infect parts of the urinary system and cause UTI. Thus, males are naturally more secure against UTI compared to females.
