Patient was instructed upon uses of low fiber diet as follows:
- Low fiber diet is recommended to reduce the frequency of bowel movements, typically in patients with irritable bowel syndrome with increased bowel movement and diarrhea.
- Fiber adds bulk to the stool and thereby, promotes bowel movement. So, reducing the amount of fiber in the diet will help slow the bowel movements down, thus helping individuals with diarrhea.
- Low residue diet is also helpful in individuals with abdominal cramps, as slowing the bowel movements and intestinal contractions in these individuals can help relieve the distress.
- Low fiber diet is recommended in individuals with inflamed bowel, such as, Crohn’s disease, as low fiber diet helps reducing the abdominal pain and cramping, secondary to reducing the volume of stool and the frequency of bowel movements.
- Low residue diet also helps during the initial weeks of ostomy procedure, as the bowel wall can be inflamed and regular volume stool can cause severe discomfort and pain during the immediate postsurgical period.
