Patient was educated on urge incontinence as follows:
- Urge incontinence is a condition in which people experience sudden uncontrollable urge to urinate, which results in sudden contraction and involuntary emptying the bladder.
- The urge will be intense, so much so that, any delay in reaching the restroom can result in people losing control of bladder and wetting themselves.
- Chronic diseases involving nervous system, brain, and spinal cord predispose individuals to develop urge incontinence. The causes can include conditions such as, multiple sclerosis, stroke, poorly managed diabetes with neuropathy, or any physical trauma to the brain and spinal cord.
- Chronically inflamed bladder, secondary to the recurrent UTIs, bladder stones, or retained urine due to prostate enlargement can result in sudden involuntary contraction of the bladder muscle and result in urge incontinence. Irritation of the detrusor muscle, which is the smooth muscle of bladder, is a vital component in these individuals developing urge incontinence.
- In some individuals with advanced urge incontinence, acts such as, drinking small amount of fluid or hearing the sound of running water, can also initiate involuntary bladder contraction and incontinence.
