Patient was educated on ulcerative colitis as follows:

  1. Ulcerative colitis is a condition, secondary to chronic inflammation in the intestines.
  2. Ulcerative colitis can occur due to an abnormal autoimmune response, which develops inflammatory cells that damage the cells of the intestinal wall and lead to symptoms of the inflammatory bowel disease.
  3. Factors like diet and stress can aggravate the symptoms of inflammatory process.
  4. Ulcerative colitis typically involves only large intestine and rectum. Also, the inflammation for the most part is limited to only the innermost lining of the intestine.
  5. The wall of the large intestine in various places become swollen, inflamed and develop ulcers giving rise to intense abdominal pain, diarrhea, discomfort and nutrition impairment. Symptoms can be severe based on the extent of the large intestine involved.
