Patient was educated on the types of edema as follows:

  1. Edema is the swelling secondary to leakage of fluid from the circulation and accumulation in body tissues.
  2. Though edema typically involves the dependent body parts with accumulation of fluid in both the lower extremities, due to gravity, involvement of other body parts also can occur, based on the disease process.
  3. Clinically, there are two different types of edema
  • Pitting Edema – This edema is mainly caused with disease processes involving vital organs, such as congestive heart failure, renal failure, and liver failure.
  • Non-Pitting Edema – This type of edema is typically seen in cases where the lymphatic drainage is affected, especially in cases of mastectomy or cancer treatment with radiation, and lymph node excision.
  1. Occasionally, pitting and non-pitting edema can coexist.
