Patient was educated on contraindications for using Trazodone as follows:
Glaucoma
- Trazodone has the potential to increase the intraocular pressure, thus contributing to headache, glaucoma, and deteriorating vision.
- Trazodone is contraindicated in individuals with history of glaucoma.
Liver disease
- Trazodone is mainly metabolized in the liver.
- If liver function is deficient, metabolism of trazodone could be slowed down.
- Slowing down of the drug metabolism can result in compromised therapeutic effects of the medication.
Renal disease
- Trazodone is significantly eliminated in urine, by the kidneys.
- Individuals with renal disease and diminished renal function cannot eliminate trazodone normally, which allows the medication to be in the blood stream longer, thus increasing the risk for side-effects and toxicity with the medication.
