Patient was educated on thiazolidinediones also called as Glitazones and mechanism of action as follows:
- Thiazolidinediones are oral antidiabetic drugs, used especially in patients with type-2 diabetes.
- Individuals with type 2 diabetes develop resistance to insulin produced in the body. So, they present with elevated blood sugar.
- Thiazolidinediones act by reducing insulin resistance and increasing the sensitivity of body cells to insulin. These drugs also result in synthesis of new fat cells.
- This can lead to increased glucose uptake by the body cells and consequently, result in reduced blood sugar and control of diabetes.
- Continued lowering of blood glucose concentrations also result in lowering of hemoglobin A1c, which is an indicator of blood glucose control over the past 2 to 3 months.
- Glitazones can be used either alone or in combination with other medications, such as, Metformin for better management of the blood sugars.
