Patient was educated on thiazolidinediones also called as Glitazones and mechanism of action as follows:

  1. Thiazolidinediones are oral antidiabetic drugs, used especially in patients with type-2 diabetes.
  2. Individuals with type 2 diabetes develop resistance to insulin produced in the body. So, they present with elevated blood sugar.
  3. Thiazolidinediones act by reducing insulin resistance and increasing the sensitivity of body cells to insulin. These drugs also result in synthesis of new fat cells.
  4. This can lead to increased glucose uptake by the body cells and consequently, result in reduced blood sugar and control of diabetes.
  5. Continued lowering of blood glucose concentrations also result in lowering of hemoglobin A1c, which is an indicator of blood glucose control over the past 2 to 3 months.
  6. Glitazones can be used either alone or in combination with other medications, such as, Metformin for better management of the blood sugars.
