Patient/caregiver was instructed upon therapeutic uses and mechanism of action of Tessalon Perles as follows:

  1. Stretch receptors in the airways and lungs are sensitive to the noxious stimuli in the inhaled air, such as, dust particles and chemicals. The stimulation/irritation of these receptors result in initiation of the cough reflex, which is a protective reflex that helps to cough the irritating noxious stimulus out, thus offering protection.
  2. Tessalon Perles is a non-narcotic medication, which numbs the airways and respiratory tissues. By numbing these tissues, Tessalon Perles reduces the sensitivity of respiratory tissues and stretch receptors to stimulation by any irritants, such as, dust particles and chemicals.
  3. This desensitization and reduced response of airways and stretch receptors to irritant sources, by use of Tessalon Perles, helps with reducing the cough and so, it is used as a cough suppressant.
  4. Tessalon Perles is used to suppress and treat  acute episodes of cough caused by common cold, activation of seasonal allergies, and chest infections, such as flu and pneumonia.
  5. Tessalon Perles can also be used to provide relief from chronic cough, secondary to repeated activation of episodes of asthma and chronic bronchitis, in individuals with history of breathing disorders and COPD.
