Patient/caregiver was educated on the side-effects of using Nitrofurantoin as follows:
Gastrointestinal side-effects
- Nitrofurantoin use can result in common general constitutional symptoms such as, nausea and vomiting. Taking dose of tamoxifen with a glass of water, after having some food or a snack can help avoid having unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms with the medication.
- Human intestine has a lot of bacteria, living in a sensitive balance with each other. These bacteria could be harmless in the intestine and help maintain the normal natural intestinal environment. Prolonged use of antibiotic for controlling any infection in any site of body does not differentiate between good and bad bacteria, killing them both, and thus compromising the sensitive balance and disturbing the natural intestinal environment. This can lead to irritation of the intestinal mucosa, abdominal pain, cramping, and antibiotic associated diarrhea. Individuals, in extreme cases, can also present with blood in the stool. Report to your physician regarding any of these symptoms of Nitrofurantoin associated diarrhea, for any appropriate measures to be considered.
