Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Metoclopramide as follows:
- Metoclopramide use carries the risk of inducing mood changes and depressive symptoms. Patients with history of mood disorders, secondary to Metoclopramide intake, can experience deterioration and worsening of symptoms of mood disorders. Individuals can present with complaints such as, feeling low, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, hallucinations, gross appetite changes, impulsiveness, agitation, aggression, and suicidal thoughts. Discuss with your physician regarding history of mood disorders, if any, and your safety with Metoclopramide use. Notify your physician regarding any worsening symptoms of mood disorders, so that, your dosage on the medication could be revised or alternative plan considered.
- Metoclopramide use for prolonged periods can result in increased secretion of the hormone prolactin from the pituitary gland. Increased prolactin secretion in males can result in reduced body & facial hair, growth of breast tissue, reduced sexual interest, and impotence. Increased prolactin secretion in women can result in excessive growth of breast tissue, milk production without pregnancy, reduced menstruation or absent menstruation, vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, reduced sexual interest, and infertility. Discuss with your physician regarding your history of increased prolactin secretion, if any, and your safety with Metoclopramide use. Notify your physician about developing any symptoms of increased prolactin secretion, as discussed above, to accommodate any changes in your plan of care.
