Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Metoclopramide as follows:

  1. Metoclopramide is mainly excreted by the kidneys. Individuals with renal disease cannot excrete Metoclopramide and metabolites normally. The medication and metabolites can stay in blood circulation for longer time, resulting in increased risk for side-effects and consequent toxicity. So, Metoclopramide could be avoided in individuals with renal dysfunction and an alternative medication considered or used with caution, with periodical monitoring for renal function and development of any toxic symptoms.
  2. Metoclopramide use carries the risk of inducing mood changes and depressive symptoms. Patients with history of mood disorders, secondary to Metoclopramide intake, can experience deterioration and worsening of symptoms of mood disorders. Individuals can present with complaints such as, feeling low, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, hallucinations, gross appetite changes, impulsiveness, agitation, aggression, and suicidal thoughts. Metoclopramide intake must be avoided or used with extreme caution in individuals with history of mood disorders.
  3. Metoclopramide has potential to cause seizure episodes and aggravate risk for seizures in individuals with history of the same. Metoclopramide use must be avoided or cautiously used in individuals with seizure history, with close monitoring for development of any seizure episodes. Discuss with your physician regarding your history of seizures, if any, and your safety with Metoclopramide use.
