Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Megestrol as follows:

  1. Secondary to steroid activity megestrol has, the medication carries the risk of feedback inhibition on the secretion of steroid hormones from the adrenal gland, thus resulting in adrenal insufficiency. Individuals can present with severe muscle weakness, fatigue, mood changes, depression, episodes of low blood pressure, dizziness and confusion, and shock. Closely monitor and report to your physician regarding any of these findings, for a possible change in the plan of care.
  2. Megestrol intake by individuals in active reproductive age group carries the risk of reducing sexual interest and performance. Women in reproductive age group can also present with menstrual irregularities, such as, abnormally increased volume of bleeding and unpredictable breakthrough bleeding. Report to your physician regarding any of these findings for an appropriate change in your plan of care.
  3. Megestrol use in expectant mothers could harm the unborn baby and result in birth defects. So, megestrol use should be avoided during pregnancy and in women planning to get pregnant. Women in active reproductive age group, taking megestrol on a regular basis must employ effective contraceptive measures in order to avoid getting pregnant.
