Patient was educated on therapeutic uses and mechanism of action of Macrodantin as follows:

  1. Macrodantin is an antibiotic that is active against a number of bacteria infecting the urinary tract and causing urinary tract infections.
  2. As macrodantin reaches poor concentrations in body sites other than the urinary tract, it cannot be used for bacterial infections involving body sites other than the urinary tract.
  3. Based on the concentration and susceptibility of the bacteria infecting the urinary tract and the dosage of macrodantin administration, the utility of macrodantin can differ. Macrodantin can be bacteriostatic, when it inhibits the multiplication of the bacteria and prevents further growth of the bacteria or bactericidal, when it kills the bacteria and completely eradicates the infection.
  4. Macrodantin acts by inhibiting synthesis of bacterial DNA, RNA, and proteins. By inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial DNA, RNA, and proteins, macrodantin inhibits the multiplication of bacteria and prevents their growth.
  5. Macrodantin also inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell wall. Inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis by macrodantin can help kill the bacteria and treat the infection.
  6. Some women are prone for recurrent bladder infections, following sexual intercourse. Macrodantin, in low doses, could be used as a prophylactic agent in such individuals, to prevent these recurrent infections from developing.
