Patient was educated on therapeutic uses and mechanism of action of Macrobid as follows:
- Macrobid is an antibiotic that is active against a number of bacteria infecting the urinary tract and causing urinary tract infections.
- As Macrobid reaches poor concentrations in body sites other than the urinary tract, it cannot be used for bacterial infections involving body sites other than the urinary tract.
- Based on the concentration and susceptibility of the bacteria infecting the urinary tract and the dosage of Macrobid administration, the utility of Macrobid can differ. Macrobid can be bacteriostatic, when it inhibits the multiplication of the bacteria and prevents further growth of the bacteria or bactericidal, when it kills the bacteria and completely eradicates the infection.
- Macrobid acts by inhibiting synthesis of bacterial DNA, RNA, and proteins. By inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial DNA, RNA, and proteins, Macrobid inhibits the multiplication of bacteria and prevents their growth.
- Macrobid also inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell wall. Inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis by Macrobid can help kill the bacteria and treat the infection.
- Some women are prone for recurrent bladder infections, following sexual intercourse. Macrobid, in low doses, could be used as a prophylactic agent in such individuals, to prevent these recurrent infections from developing.
