Patient/caregiver was instructed upon therapeutic uses and mechanism of action of Lioresal as follows:

  1. Gama-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain and spinal cord, inhibiting the nerve impulses to the muscles and promoting with muscle relaxation.
  2. Lioresal is an analog of GABA and is thought to stimulate the GABA receptors in the brain and spinal cord, thus potentiating the inhibition of nerve impulses and reducing the amplitude or strength of nerve impulses.
  3. This action of Lioresal also helps with reducing the amplitude of muscle spasms caused by brain and spinal cord injury and thereby, promote muscle relaxation.
  4. Lioresal also helps with an overall depression of the brain and spinal cord, resulting in drowsiness and dizziness and reduced sensitivity to pain.
  5. Lioresal mainly helps with muscle spasms, secondary to conditions such as, spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis. Muscle spasms with consequent limitations on range of motion contribute significantly to the pain and discomfort in these conditions. By relieving spasms and promoting muscle relaxation, Lioresal helps with relief from pain and discomfort.
