Patient/caregiver was instructed upon therapeutic uses of hydroxyzine as follows:

Seasonal allergies

  • Individuals can present with rhinitis and burning sensation of eyes, secondary to hay fever and activation of allergies during the pollen season.
  • Individuals can also present with these symptoms, secondary to exposure to dust and various chemicals, due to change in the living environment.
  • Histamine produced in the body during these allergic responses bind to the H-1 receptors on the cells in the body and results in development of symptoms of allergy, such as, itching of the skin, sneezing, runny nose, and increased mucus production in the body.
  • Hydroxyzine use helps with calming down of these symptoms and offers relief from dust and seasonal allergies.

Motion sickness

  • Action of acetylcholine on muscarinic receptors can contribute to development of symptoms of motion sickness, such as, nausea and vomiting.
  • Hydroxyzine use, by inhibiting the muscarinic receptors, helps with preventing and controlling the excessive nausea and vomiting sensations and offers relief from symptoms of motion sickness.
