Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Fluticasone as follows:

  1. Fluticasone must be cautiously used in individuals with history of diabetes and poor blood sugar control, as long-term use of Fluticasone can result in increased insulin resistance and increased synthesis of glucose from sources other than carbohydrates. This can contribute to aggravated blood sugars and can result in poor blood sugar control in diabetics. Individuals can present with signs and symptoms of elevated blood sugars, such as, dry mouth, frequent urination, increased thirst and hunger, dry skin, and blurred vision. Closely follow for these signs and any consistently elevated blood sugar readings and report them to your physician, for further investigation, to facilitate a change in plan of care. Observing compliance with intake of antidiabetic medications prescribed and dietary limitations recommended can help with better control of blood sugars and hyperglycemic symptoms.
  2. Fluticasone should be cautiously administered to individuals with history of osteoporosis. Use of Fluticasone in osteoporotic individuals can result in further loss of bone mass and deterioration of osteoporosis with weakening of the skeletal framework. Closely follow for signs and symptoms of worsening osteoporosis, such as, exacerbation of skeletal pain and pathological fractures, even at the slightest/no injury. Report any such findings to your physician immediately, so that, an alternative plan of care could be considered and necessary changes made to your plan of care.
