Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Anastrozole as follows:

  1. Anastrozole carries the risk of causing and/or aggravating cardiac arrhythmias in individuals with history. Anastrozole can also interact with many antibacterial and antifungal antibiotics, antiarrhythmic medications, diuretics, antidepressants, and antipsychotic medications, resulting in development or aggravation of underlying cardiac arrhythmias, leading to debility and sudden cardiac death. Avoid taking anastrozole along with medications belonging to the above-mentioned groups, to prevent any dangerous arrhythmias from developing.
  2. The levels of calcium must be closely monitored, as calcium in the blood plays a significant role in the optimal function of many organ systems, such as, heart, muscle, brain and nerves. Observe compliance with periodical lab draws ordered on blood calcium and phosphorus levels, to accommodate any changes in the dose of Anastrozole accordingly.
  3. Anastrozole is extensively metabolized in the liver, to inactive metabolites. If liver function is deficient, the metabolism of anastrozole can be compromised. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in increased risk for side-effects and consequent toxicity. So, observe compliance with periodical monitoring for liver functions ordered, to prevent development of any toxic symptoms.
