Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Ambien as follows:
- Do not take Ambien, if you ever manifested any allergic responses to intake of Ambien or any other medications belonging to the sedatives group, such as, midazolam, triazolam, and flurazepam. In the event of an allergic response with any of these medications, check with your physician regarding your safety with intake of Ambien.
- Ambien is extensively metabolized in the liver and the inactive metabolites are excreted in the urine. If liver function is deficient, the metabolism of Ambien can be compromised. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in increased risk for side-effects and consequent toxicity. So, Ambien could be avoided in individuals with hepatic dysfunction and an alternative medication considered or used with caution, with periodical monitoring for liver functions and development of any toxic symptoms.
- Avoid having Ambien dose, if you have activity or job left for the day, to take care of. As Ambien is fast to act, make sure you are retired to rest for the day, before taking the dose of Ambien.
