Patient was educated on the symptoms of peripheral artery disease as follows:
- The classic symptom of peripheral artery disease is leg pain when walking, which often resolves with rest.
- This pain is called intermittent claudication.
- Other symptoms include cold and bluish skin in the extremities, poor nail and hair growth in the extremity involved.
- Unresolving ulcers can form in the limb and with complications of infection and necrosis. All these findings are secondary to poor blood supply and reduced oxygen supply.
- PAD is typically diagnosed by finding an ankle-brachial index(ABI) less than 0.90, which is a ratio of systolic blood pressure at the ankle and the systolic blood pressure at the arm.
- This difference is because of poor blood supply in the distal lower extremity. The diagnosis can be confirmed using Doppler duplex ultrasound and angiography.
