Patient was educated on the symptoms of peripheral artery disease as follows:

  1. The classic symptom of peripheral artery disease is leg pain when walking, which often resolves with rest.
  2. This pain is called intermittent claudication.
  3. Other symptoms include cold and bluish skin in the extremities, poor nail and hair growth in the extremity involved.
  4. Unresolving ulcers can form in the limb and with complications of infection and necrosis. All these findings are secondary to poor blood supply and reduced oxygen supply.
  5. PAD is typically diagnosed by finding an ankle-brachial index(ABI) less than 0.90, which is a ratio of systolic blood pressure at the ankle and the systolic blood pressure at the arm.
  6. This difference is because of poor blood supply in the distal lower extremity. The diagnosis can be confirmed using Doppler duplex ultrasound and angiography.
