Patient was educated on the symptoms of peripheral artery disease as follows:
- Weak pulse in the affected limb, as the circulation is blocked.
- The affected limb can be cold to touch, as the blood supply is compromised. A limb with normal blood supply will be felt warm to touch.
- Painful cramping in the muscles of lower extremity, especially in the calf and thigh muscles. This pain can be more intense during ambulation and ease upon resting.
- Numbness and weakness of the involved extremity, secondary to poor supply of nutrients.
- Open sores and wounds on the feet and toes that are difficult to heal, as oxygen and nutrients are needed for proper healing.
- Slower growth of toe nails on the involved extremity with loss of hair and shiny skin.
