Patient was educated on the symptoms of peripheral artery disease as follows:

  1. Weak pulse in the affected limb, as the circulation is blocked.
  2. The affected limb can be cold to touch, as the blood supply is compromised. A limb with normal blood supply will be felt warm to touch.
  3. Painful cramping in the muscles of lower extremity, especially in the calf and thigh muscles. This pain can be more intense during ambulation and ease upon resting.
  4. Numbness and weakness of the involved extremity, secondary to poor supply of nutrients.
  5. Open sores and wounds on the feet and toes that are difficult to heal, as oxygen and nutrients are needed for proper healing.
  6. Slower growth of toe nails on the involved extremity with loss of hair and shiny skin.
