Patient was educated on symptoms of lactose intolerance as follows:
- Individuals with lactose intolerance poorly digest lactose in the small intestine.
- When undigested lactose enters the large intestine, in about an hour or two after consumption, this portion of the intestine is intolerant to undigested lactose and so, present with symptoms characteristic of the condition.
- Large intestine has bacteria that cause fermentation of undigested sugar, lactose.
- Gas is produced because of fermentation.
- This gas production results in symptoms of abdominal discomfort, fullness, bloating, belching, and flatulence.
- Undigested sugar lactose in the large intestine also irritates the intestines, resulting in hyperactive bowel movements or diarrhea, to eliminate the poorly tolerated sugar from the body.
- Severe diarrhea can result in symptoms of dehydration and loss of fluid volume in these individuals.
