Patient was educated on the symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease as follows:

  1. Activation of autoimmune disorders
  • As the cause of the inflammatory bowel disease involves an abnormal autoimmune response, this can lead to exacerbation of any underlying autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, dry eyes and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
  1. Abdominal pain
  • Pain is secondary to the inflammation and swelling of the intestinal walls.
  1. Abdominal cramps
  • Contractions of the smooth muscle in the swollen intestines result in cramps.
