Patient/caregiver was educated on management measures for control of statis dermatitis as follows:
- Avoid using any strong soaps and cosmetic products on the irritated skin, which can help ease the irritation and promote healing. Avoid changing moisturizers, oils, soaps, and shampoos frequently and continue with items that appeal to the nature of skin. Soaking the irritated skin in warm oatmeal bath daily for 15 minutes, pat drying the skin gently, and applying gentle moisturizer can ease the itch and prevent further irritation of the skin.
- Massage and exercises to drain the blocked fluid, application of compression garments, and elevation of the affected body part for gravity to help the drainage can assist with avoiding any fluid back-up, thus preventing development of stasis dermatitis and cellulitis changes.
- Unrelieved stasis and chronic inflammation of skin can result in severe damage to the involved skin tissue and development of ulcers/wounds. The open wounds are prone to be easily infected and lead to cellulitis. Maintaining a close watch for signs and symptoms of cellulitis such as, pain, fever, swelling, redness & warmth, and oozing of any foul- smelling pus from the involved skin site can help early intervention and prevent development of complications.
