Patient/caregiver was educated on management measures for control of statis dermatitis as follows:
- Proper trimming of the nails can help prevent excessive scratching of skin and irritating it further. Having mittens on can also help prevent irritation of skin from the nails. Covering the affected skin with gentle cotton dressing can also help protect the skin from worsening of skin condition due to irritation and continued scratching.
- Individuals with history of congestive heart failure must observe compliance with dietary recommendations made for heart health, prescribed diuretic & other medications, limitations on salt intake, and rest in bed for 15 minutes every 2-3 hours with feet elevated above heart level to help fluid drainage.
- Individuals with history of venous thrombosis and blood clots can be at increased risk for obstruction to the drainage of blood in the veins, back-up of blood, venous stasis, and dermatitis. Observing compliance with intake of prescribed blood thinner & anticoagulant medications can help with reducing the risk for episodes of stasis dermatitis.
- Cleansing any open wounds regularly with mild soap & water and applying any recommended antibiotic ointments can help prevent development of cellulitis.
