Patient/caregiver was educated on management measures for control of statis dermatitis as follows:

  1. In individuals with history of varicose veins, maintaining legs in the dependent posture for extended periods of time, such as, during prolonged walking, sitting, or standing, can result in stasis. This is due to gravity acting in the downward direction, resulting in increased fluid accumulation in the lower extremities. Avoiding prolonged periods with legs in dependent posture and frequent changes in position can help prevent fluid accumulation and stasis.
  2. Resting in bed with feet elevated above the heart level, using two pillows placed under the lower legs, can help drain the blocked fluid towards the heart. Assuming this resting posture for 15 minutes, once every 2-3 hours, can help with improved fluid drainage, reduce the stasis, and improve the clinical outcome.
  3. Having stock of OTC antiallergy medications readily available at home can help, as intake of medication at the earliest notice of inflammation and allergy signs can help prevent further worsening of the condition. Applying OTC calamine lotion or 1% hydrocortisone cream to the irritated skin can offer relief and help ease the itch.
  4. Apply moisturizing cream over the affected skin daily, to prevent excessive drying of skin. Moisturizer helps with preventing excessive drying of skin and consequent irritation.
