Nurse instructed the patient and caregiver on how to decide the size of the cuff as follows:

  • Always, using a blood pressure cuff that is appropriate for your size arm is mandatory to have a correct reading on your blood pressure numbers.
  • Before buying a cuff, measure your arm around the middle of the upper arm, on the limb you intend to take your blood pressure reading.
  • The general rule is that the size of your arm should fall within the middle 75% of the cuff’s size.
  • Cuffs are available in various sizes, such as, an adult cuff is about 27 – 34 cm in size, and a large cuff is about 35 – 44 cm in size.
  • So, based on the size of the arm, an appropriate cuff must be selected to take the reading. So, for using an adult cuff with size of 27 – 34 cm, your arm size should be around 30 cm.
  • A cuff that is used on the thigh is also available at a size of 45 – 52 cm.
