Patient was educated on signs and symptoms of pulmonary embolism as follows:

  1. Signs and symptoms of pulmonary embolism depend on factors such as, the extent of the involvement of the lung with the clots, the size and number of clots formed.
  2. Smaller clots can even go unnoticed without producing any symptoms with the patient.
  3. But, larger clots or multiple clots formed can significantly affect the functional status of the individual with very pronounced symptoms.
  4. Signs and symptoms of pulmonary embolism can include
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Sudden unexplained shortness of breath
  • Hemoptysis or coughing up of blood
  • Dizziness
  • Anxiety
  • Episodes of altered level of consciousness
  • Shallow rapid breathing
  • Elevated heart rate.
  • These are the symptoms produced secondary to a clot that has dislodged from the deep veins in lower extremities and has made its way to the lung.
  1. Signs and symptoms of an embolus that is still lodged in the deep veins of lower extremities can typically be the symptoms of DVT. The signs and symptoms are as follows:
  • Pain and tenderness along the vein in the leg, especially the calf muscle of lower extremities
  • Swelling of the limb below the site of clot
  • Redness with localized warmth in the involved lower extremity.
