Patient/caregiver were instructed regarding signs and symptoms of central sleep apnea as follows:
Central sleep apnea is a type of sleep apnea with dysfunction at the level of brain being the major contributory factor. Poor signaling from the brain to the major respiratory muscles result in poor control & regulation of the respiratory activity, resulting in central sleep apnea with the following signs and symptoms.
- Headaches and difficulty concentrating: Poor rest during the night can lead to headaches and confusion the following morning. Individuals can present with difficulty concentrating, which can result in compromised safety, falls, and accidents.
- Excessive daytime sleepiness: Individuals with central sleep apnea, in an attempt to cover for the sleep deprivation during the night, present with excessive day time sedation. Individuals can doze off performing essential tasks, such as, driving, thus compromising safety & security.
- Lack of energy: Poor gas exchange with reduced oxygen pick-up due to apneic spells leads to compromised oxygen availability for body organ & tissue needs. As oxygen is a major fuel for the metabolic needs of various body organs, reduced oxygen supply due to apnea can result in compromised metabolism of various body tissues, resulting in listlessness and fatigue.
