Patient was educated on the side effects of using emollient laxatives as follows:

  1. Nausea and vomiting
  • Nauseating sensation with feeling of vomiting is a very frequent side effect of emollient laxatives, especially the liquid forms.
  • So, taking them along with some fruit juice or soda can help to avoid the nausea.
  1. Diarrhea
  • Emollient laxatives sometimes cause excessive laxative effect, resulting in diarrhea.
  • This can result in excessive fluid and electrolyte loss, leading to dehydration.
  1. Dehydration
  • Excessive fluid loss in the stool can result in low fluid volume and symptoms of dehydration.
